Description
1843 Peter Force printing on rice paper from "American Archives" using the original July 4th, 1776 Declaration of Independence plate. In 1843, Peter Force utilized the original Stone Copperplate to produce additional impressions of the Declaration of Independence on rice paper for inclusion in Volume I of his multi-volume work, "American Archives". Congress authorized the printing of up to 1,500 copies of the volume; however, subscriptions fell well short of that figure. The exact number ultimately printed remains unknown, though most estimates suggest approximately 500 copies were produced. Each rice paper printing of the Declaration was intended to be folded and inserted into the inside front cover of Volume I of the Fifth Series. The number of surviving rice paper copies is uncertain, but it is believed less than one third of these printings remain. Approx. sight size 28" x 24 3/4". According to the original Early American History listing, the sheet measures 29" x 25 3/4". See Early American History Auctions invoice and original listing details in final two photos.
