Description
A soft-ground etching mold-made Lana paper titled “American Indian Theme I” by Roy Lichtenstein. Published in 1980. Hand signed in pencil on the lower right with an annotation of 5/8 on the lower left. The composition presents a stylized figure rendered with bold outlines, graphic patterning, and flat areas of primary color, drawing on Lichtenstein’s interest in Native American imagery interpreted through his Pop Art visual language. As a young child growing up in Manhattan, Roy Lichtenstein visited the Natural History Museum and became fascinated with the Northwest Coast Native Americans. Lichtenstein often drew inspiration from Native American culture and was intrigued by their designs in totems, textiles, and baskets. He would re-imagine the geometric patterns in his signature pop art stylization. This limited-edition print is a prime example of this exploration.
