Description
Issued in 1957 under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, this 5 Rupees silver coin from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) commemorates the 2500th anniversary of the advent of Buddhism. Struck in .925 fine silver, the coin weighs 28.28 grams and measures 39 mm in diameter, making it both substantial and elegant in hand. The obverse features a crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by a stylized decorative border, while the reverse displays a Buddhist Dharmachakra (Wheel of Dharma) flanked by lotus flowers and the commemorative inscription. With a total mintage of only 250,000 pieces, this coin was the first commemorative issue of independent Ceylon and symbolizes the cultural and religious heritage of the nation. Its historical importance, coupled with its silver content and limited production, has made it a coveted collector's item among both numismatists and those interested in Buddhist or colonial-era memorabilia.
