Description
This extraordinary rarity originates from the German occupation of Ljubljana (Laibach) during World War II, issued on January 5, 1944, with an official print run of only 100 examples. The stamp, with a face value of 50 centesimi in dark bluish violet, was printed by photogravure on Italian base stock with watermark Crown Type 11 inverted, perforated comb 14, and bears the distinctive overprint of the Provincial Government of Laibach. Historically significant, these issues reflect the turbulent years of wartime occupation and are among the scarcest philatelic survivals of the period. Specialists estimate that fewer than 15 mint condition copies remain in private collections worldwide, making this one of the most elusive and desirable WWII occupation stamps on the global market. Its aesthetic design, merging Italian definitives with the bold Laibach overprint, serves as both a postal relic and a powerful cultural testimony to the political realities of 1944. Comparable occupation rarities, such as Inselpost issues with known limited survival, have achieved very high auction realizations, confirming the outstanding value and importance of this piece. A key highlight for advanced collectors of World War II philately, Italian occupations, and European postal history. Estimate "$1,500 – 4,000".
Condition
Mint, fresh colors, intact perforations, light hinge remnant on reverse, overall very fine for this extreme rarity.
