Description
Offered here is a pair of classic engraved issues from Nova Scotia, comprising the 1 cent black of 1860 (Michel CA-NS 5ay, Scott CA-NS 8a, Yvert 5B, SG 18) and the 2 cents lilac of 1863 (Michel CA-NS 6y, Scott CA-NS 9, Yvert 6B, SG 23), both printed by the American Bank Note Company on white wove paper and perforated 12. Each stamp features the youthful portrait of Queen Victoria in finely executed line engraving, framed by ornamental scrollwork that reflects the artistry of mid-19th century colonial design. The 1 cent black, designed in part by Leonard C. Wyon together with Jeens, Bannister, and Prud’homme, is renowned for its deep black tone and sharp impression, while the 2 cents lilac is admired for its delicate hue and refined engraving. Issued for daily postal use, these stamps belong to the definitive series that carried Nova Scotia’s communications during the years leading up to Confederation in 1867, making them historically and culturally significant as symbols of colonial identity. Collectors of British North America consistently seek these issues, which compare favorably to the engraved Queen Victoria definitives of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Together they illustrate both the technical mastery of the American Bank Note Company and the enduring appeal of Nova Scotia’s classic philately. Estimate "$450 – 700".
Condition
Both mint hinged (MH). The 1 cent black shows fresh gum with light hinge trace and sharp impression, while the 2 cents lilac retains strong colour with hinge remnant and minor gum disturbance. Perforations intact, overall fine to very fine appearance.
