Description
This exceptional and historically important group represents four occupation issues from Transylvania during the turbulent post–World War I period, issued in 1919 for the cities of Cluj (Kolozsvár) and Oradea (Nagyvárad) under Romanian administration. The set comprises four different denominations, each originating from Hungarian definitive stamps designed by Tull Ödön and typographed with local Romanian overprints reflecting the rapid political transition following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Included is the 2 bani Cluj issue with REGATUL ROMANIEI overprint, showing the scarce variety with the upper right ring broken, catalogued as Philatelia Hungarica HU-KO 18d, a recognized minor variant of significant philatelic interest. The 4 bani Oradea issue is of outstanding rarity, featuring the first overprint “KOZTARSASAG” inverted, followed by the REGATUL ROMANIEI and BANI overprint on the Hungarian base stamp, catalogued as HU-NVD 52Ih; only one sheet of 100 examples is recorded, making this one of the rarest Romanian local occupation varieties. The set further includes the 5 bani Cluj issue, catalogued as Michel RO-NR 28I and corresponding listings in Yvert, Stanley Gibbons, and Philatelia Hungarica, as well as the 10 bani Oradea issue, Michel RO-NR 30II, with a relatively small recorded printing of 18,700 copies. All stamps share the characteristic Patriarchal Cross multiple watermark upright, comb perforation 15, and typographic printing. These issues vividly illustrate the complexity of postal administration in Transylvania during 1919 and are highly sought after by specialists in Romanian, Hungarian, and occupation philately. Offered here as a matched group, they provide an excellent opportunity to acquire scarce and rare varieties from one of the most dynamic chapters in Central European postal history. Estimate "$850 to 1250".
