Description
Civil War cavalry carbine cartridge box that still retains what appears to be 20 cartridges that are "frozen" into the drilled wood cartridge block. It does not appear that it would be possible to remove these cartridges without damaging them or the box. The box is is made of black bridle leather. When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the carbine box. The outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge. The maker's stamping is present but illegible. Leather is good with minimal crazing. The closure tab is present but torn on one side.Inner flap is complete as is the small implement pouch The bottom of the pouch has a brass finial and two black japanned roller buckles but most of the black finish has worn off. The box’s back side still retains the two vertical leather loops and the horizontal strap. The stitching is strong and tight overall.
