Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, in the style of the Preah Ko period (late 9th century CE), ca. 20th century CE. A monumental stone relief lintel of extraordinary scale and craftsmanship, intricately carved with the Hindu god Vishnu riding the divine bird Garuda, surrounded by mythological attendants and naga-serpent deities. Executed in the style of the Preah Ko period, this 20th century sculpture is modeled after the celebrated lintel from Prasat Kok Po A in Puok, Siem Reap, an early Angkorian temple site whose original masterpiece now resides in the Musee Guimet in Paris. At the center, Vishnu stands in commanding posture upon the outspread wings of Garuda, the eagle-like mount and celestial protector. With muscular form and regal poise, Vishnu grasps the tails of two monstrous naga serpents whose coiling bodies radiate outward across the lintel, framing a complex tableau of divine and demonic figures. Size: 71" L x 4" W x 28.5" H (180.3 cm x 10.2 cm x 72.4 cm); 32.5" H (82.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Garuda's wings and talons emerge from beneath, dynamically rendered in layered relief, while fierce guardian heads, celestial dancers, and vegetal scrolls fill the background with rhythmic movement. The sculptor has captured the vigor and spiritual grandeur of the original Preah Ko style - characterized by deeply undercut floral motifs, balanced composition, and the dynamic interplay of deities and serpents. The sandstone surface retains traces of chisel marks, evoking the authenticity and monumentality of its Angkorian inspiration. Intended for architectural installation or grand display, this relief serves as a masterful homage to Cambodia's classical heritage. It reflects both the precision of modern craftsmanship and the enduring spiritual language of Angkor, where the gods of Hindu cosmology were carved into stone as eternal guardians of temples and the universe alike.
