Description
Egypt, Mamluk period, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. A powerful object with a precise purpose, this dark glass coin weight was made to keep the marketplace honest, one measured gram at a time. The form is compact and rounded, with a slightly domed face bearing a recessed medallion stamped with a hexagram, commonly known today as the Star of David. In the medieval Islamic world, such star devices were not exclusively Jewish in meaning - they also functioned as broadly protective and geometric emblems, used across manuscripts, metalwork, and seals. Here, the motif sits like a quiet signature, anchoring the piece in the visual language of the period while hinting at the diverse, interwoven communities of Mamluk Egypt. Softened by centuries of handling, this weight survives as an intimate relic of daily commerce, when glass, not paper, helped guarantee value. Size: 1" Diameter (2.5 cm)
