Description
A scarce colonial issue from Portuguese India, produced in 1911 following the revolution that proclaimed the Portuguese Republic. This stamp belongs to the definitive series depicting King Carlos I, originally issued before the monarchy was abolished. The portrait of the King, engraved in brown and black, is overprinted diagonally in red with "REPUBLICA", marking the political shift from monarchy to republic. Denomination: 2 Tangas. Printed typographically by Casa da Moeda de Portugal, designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, perforation 11½. Catalogued as Michel PT-IN 230, Yvert 202, Stanley Gibbons 347, Afinsa 209. A key transitional issue combining royal iconography with revolutionary overprint, highly collectible for both Portuguese colonial and political history themes. Estimate "$40 – 60".
