Description
This attractive 1954 issue from Netherlands New Guinea presents two definitive stamps featuring the iconic Bird-of-Paradise, one of the most celebrated symbols of the island’s rich fauna. Designed by André van der Vossen and printed by Joh. Enschedé using high-quality photogravure, the 1-cent and 5-cent denominations (Scott 22–23) were part of the long-running daily definitive series used throughout the Dutch administration of New Guinea from 1954 until 1962. Measuring 25 × 32 mm and printed in multicolour without watermark, the stamps display refined craftsmanship with vivid tonal transitions that highlight the bird’s distinctive plumage as it perches on a stylized branch, reflecting both naturalistic detail and mid-century Dutch design aesthetics. With comb perforation 12½ × 12, the issue exemplifies the technical standards maintained by Enschedé during the period. The Bird-of-Paradise motif holds particular cultural and historic importance, symbolizing the region’s biodiversity as well as the colonial presence in the western Pacific during the final decade of Dutch rule before administrative transfer in the early 1960s. These stamps circulated widely in everyday postal use and remain among the most recognisable designs from the territory. Their combination of artistic merit, regional significance, and historical relevance has made them enduring favourites among collectors of Oceania, colonial issues, and thematic bird philately. Estimate "$35 – 55".
Condition
1c stamp appears unused with original gum and light hinging; 5c stamp shows light postal cancellation; both with intact perforations and fresh colours.
