Description
This attractive and historically significant trio originates from the German administration of the Mariana Islands and forms part of the celebrated Yacht Hohenzollern definitive series issued in 1901. The set comprises the high denomination values of 1 Mark 2 Mark and 3 Mark depicting the imperial yacht Hohenzollern under steam at sea a powerful symbol of German naval prestige and overseas ambition during the late Wilhelmine period. Printed by Reichsdruckerei Berlin using high quality engraved printing the stamps exhibit sharp line work strong contrasts and refined ornamental framing typical of German colonial issues. Issued without watermark these stamps were intended primarily for higher postal rates including registered mail heavy parcels and official correspondence within the German Pacific territories. Their production reflects the structured colonial postal system established across Micronesia following German acquisition of the Marianas from Spain. The series remained in use until the Japanese occupation in 1914 making well preserved mint examples increasingly scarce. The present group is offered in mixed Mint Never Hinged and Mint Hinged condition with fresh original gum and well balanced perforations. As a complete high value trio this set represents an important opportunity for collectors of German colonies imperial maritime iconography and early twentieth century Pacific postal history combining aesthetic appeal with strong historical context and enduring collector demand. Estimate "$300 to 500".
