Russian dated 1868 with the mark of Daniszewski , an icon depicting the life of John the Baptist presented in multiple narrative scenes, painted in tempera on a wooden panel with gold leaf highlights and backed with red velvet fabric. The composition is housed within a hinged frame designed to open and reveal the painted surface, fitted with a silver oklad featuring cut out openings for the figures and faces allowing the imagery beneath to show through. The oklad is richly worked and bears Russian silver hallmarks including 84 indicating the 84 zolotnik standard. Combined approximate weight of the oklad: 920 grams. The layered construction and devotional format reflect traditional Russian Orthodox iconography and silversmithing practices. Provenance Ortolani family collection, Rome and Montevideo.

Condition: Good to fair overall antique condition with surface wear and patina consistent with age and handling. Some areas of paint loss are present, along with wear to the edges and corners.
