LOT NOTES
Sold with a certificate of provenance from Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, written and signed by Blair Resika, documenting the history of the painting.
As documented in the above certificate, Wolf Kahn gifted this painting to Libby Norman, a significant figure in the expatriate artistic community, and Mother-in-law of Paul Resika, in exchange for being given her house to live and paint in for a period of several months in 1955. Paul Resika and Wolf Kahn were lifelong friends and fellow students of Hans Hofmann. Resika spent significant time in Mexico (including Tepoztlán) throughout his career, often painting there during the winters. Kahn produced several works during this period, most notably a painting titled My House in Tepoztlán (1955) and various drawings of local scenes (such as Men Playing Guitars in Tepoztlán). It was a formative period for Kahn; his work from this stay was exhibited at the Galeria Antonio Souza in Mexico City in 1956 and is credited with helping him move toward the more atmospheric, color-focused style for which he became famous.
