Description
Byzantine Empire Heraclius Gold Solidus, Constantinople Mint, Year 5 (AD 614-615) - A historic Byzantine gold solidus struck in Constantinople during the reign of Emperor Heraclius, dated to regnal year five (AD 614-615). This early 7th century issue reflects the imperial authority and Christian symbolism that defined Byzantine coinage at the height of the empire's influence across the Mediterranean world. Struck in high purity gold (Approximately 95% - 98% gold), the solidus served as the principal international currency of Late Antiquity and circulated widely through Europe, the Near East and North Africa. The obverse depicts the facing busts of Emperor Heraclius at left and his son and co-emperor Heraclius Constantine at right. Both figures wear the imperial chlamys and crowns surmounted by crosses, with an additional cross positioned above, emphasizing the divine authority of the Byzantine rulers. The paired imperial portraiture symbolizes dynastic continuity and the consolidation of power during Heraclius' reign. The reverse features a cross potent standing atop three steps, a powerful Christian emblem representing Golgotha and the triumph of the faith within the empire. Surrounding legend reads VICTORIA AV??IT, with the officina letter E appearing at the end of the inscription to denote the regnal year. The exergue bears the inscription CONOB, indicating the Constantinople mint and the refined gold standard of the Byzantine solidus. Coins of Heraclius mark a pivotal era in Byzantine history, struck during the dramatic conflicts with the Sassanian Empire and at the dawn of the transformative events that reshaped the eastern Mediterranean in the 7th century. Surviving examples remain highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance, enduring gold content and iconic Christian imagery. The coin measures approximately 20mm in diameter. Weight: 4.5 grams. Auction Note: The buyer of this lot will receive an appreciation letter from Prince Lorenzo de' Medici for participating in his family's auction.
