Description
An important and finely woven antique Tlingit Chilkat ceremonial dance blanket of child’s size, executed in mountain goat wool with cedar bark, in soft yellow, light turquoise, and black, with long flowing fringe. The composition centers on a bold crest face flanked by ovoid eyes and additional formline elements representing spirit and animal beings, rendered in classic split-form design and enclosed within a strong, balanced border. The layout follows traditional conventions of mirrored, clan-based imagery, articulated through precise black wool twining that defines the complex curvilinear structure with clarity and control. The specific arrangement and interplay of these elements appear unusual and may represent a unique or seldom-encountered design. Chilkat blankets hold profound cultural significance among Northwest Coast peoples, historically worn by high-ranking individuals during potlatches, memorials, and ceremonial gatherings as expressions of lineage, identity, and inherited crest rights. When worn, the blanket’s movement—particularly the cascading fringe—animates the design in rhythm with dance and song. The present example reflects a high level of technical skill and adherence to traditional weaving practices, particularly notable in a child-sized format, which is encountered less frequently. Overall condition shows light wear consistent with age and use, of most significant noteworthiness is the fading exhibited to the front of the weaving due to years of exposure to sunlight; the back retains original bright colors. Measures approximately 47.5" x 31" high, including the fringe.
