
Description
A Neoclassical Wedgwood and Bentley black basalt lidded urn of classical ovoid form. The stoneware body is decorated with sprigged laurel leaf garlands draped from bacchic masks and cherub-head medallions using turned and molded techniques with applied relief. The vessel features a short, waisted neck topped with a beaded rim, resting on a turned pedestal stem over a square, stepped plinth base with a dentil-molded border. The conforming domed lid is decorated with radial fluting and topped by a ball finial. The piece is held together by an internal brass rod and nut assembly. The underside is impressed with Wedgwood and Etruria marks and bears provenance labels from the Institute of Fine Arts, M.S.N.Y. 1982 and the SK Rubin Collection. 18th century.
