Description
An early hand painted presentation game board, Civil War era, having turquoise and black squares surrounded by concentric salmon, blue and red near square borders, and having an applied molded edge in black paint. The board with some use wear, most noticeable along the border - the board is untouched and the paint all original and dated 1861 on reverse side. The cursive script on reverse reads "Lakeland (or Lockland) / May 28th 1861 / Presented To / Henry Lowe by W.H.C." Measures 14 3/4" x 15 1/4". Notes: There were multiple Henry Lowe's that lived in the 1861 time frame, many serving in the Civil War. There was also a multitude of towns that existed in America named "Lakeland". Assuming the town is Lakeland and not Lockland, the most likely is the Henry Lowe that enlisted in Adrian Michigan in 1862, as this town was only 50 miles from Lakeland Michigan. Henry Lowe (1840–1862) - enlisted as a Private in Company C of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, at Adrian, Michigan, for 3 years of service. Henry died at Epiphany Hospital, Washington, D.C. on July 17, 1862, from wounds received in action at Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1, 1862. Note the date of May 1861, the date of this game board, is 1 month prior to his enlistment in June 1861, so the presentation of this game board at this time, assuming from Lakeland, supports the conjecture that this was the Henry Lowe who owned this game board. More research needs to be done regarding the cursive script writing of Lakeland or Lockland to provide further proof of this opinion.
