Menominee Feast Ladle, with Trade Silver Medallion, Published
mid-19th century
elegantly formed, having an hourglass-shaped handle flaring to the scoop; rocker-engraved and cutout silver medallion with imagery of a beaver and hearts
length 9-1/2 inches x width of scoop 4 inches
The woodwork creations of the Woodland Indians are introduced through a variety of prestige eating utensils and drinking vessels that proclaimed the discernment and status of their owners... In the same tradition is the Menominee burl ladle (cat. no. 136) with its openwork silver ornament depicting a beaver in profile. (Wardwell, ed., "An Important Third Dimension: American Indian and Eskimo Sculpture" in Native Paths: American Indian Art from the Collection of Charles and Valerie Diker, 1998: 101).
