Description
This gold sovereign was struck in 1925 under the reign of King George V, during the final year of sovereign coinage intended for circulation in the interwar period. The obverse features a left-facing bust of George V, while the reverse depicts Benedetto Pistrucci?s iconic design of St George slaying the dragon ? a motif long associated with British numismatic tradition. Minted in 22mm diameter and weighing 7.99 grams, the coin consists of 91.67% gold, equivalent to 7.32 grams of pure gold content. With a mintage of 946,615 pieces, the 1925 sovereign was struck at the London Mint but largely held in bank reserves rather than entering widespread circulation, resulting in a high survival rate and availability today in attractive condition. Its refined milled edge and medal alignment are hallmarks of sovereign precision during the reign of George V, whose effigy was sculpted by Bertram Mackennal. Though dated 1925, many of these coins were restruck in the 1940s and 1950s for bullion purposes, contributing to its prominence in both numismatic and investment circles.
Condition
Well preserved, minor signs of handling, sharp details, lustrous surface consistent with sovereigns from stored reserves.
