Description
This rare and extensive group represents the Austro Hungarian Feldpost military issues of 1917 and 1918 produced for wartime postal service across the empire and occupied territories during the final phase of the First World War. The series is unified by finely engraved portrait designs of Emperor Karl I executed by Ferdinand Schirnbock and Koloman Moser and printed by gravure intaglio on unwatermarked paper. The group comprises multiple denominations ranging from 1 heller through 80 heller and up to 1 and 2 kronen with a wide palette including blue green orange red brown ultramarine olive slate blue and carmine tones. Individual stamp sizes range approximately from 27 x 28 mm to 31 x 29 mm with line perforations 11.5 and 12.5 depending on value. Catalog references include Scott AT M49a through AT M82 alongside Michel AT AH F53B through F XIV Stanley Gibbons AT AH 49a through 85 and corresponding listings in ANK Philatelia Hungarica Polish Catalog and Unificato. Issued exclusively for military use these stamps were integral to maintaining communication within a multi ethnic empire under extreme wartime pressure and they embody the administrative discipline and symbolic authority of imperial rule. The differing print runs from approximately 520000 to over 4 million illustrate wartime demand and logistical planning while the survival of mixed mint never hinged and lightly hinged examples is increasingly uncommon due to heavy contemporary usage. This assemblage offers strong historical depth aesthetic consistency and documentary value and stands as a compelling representation of Austro Hungarian military postal history at the moment of imperial collapse. Estimate "$950 to 1400".
