Description
Issued in 1946 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese discovery of Guinea (1446–1946), this bronze 1 Escudo coin reflects both colonial history and Portugal’s commemorative coinage tradition. Struck at the Casa da Moeda de Lisboa, the coin weighs 7.5 grams, measures 26.5 mm in diameter with a thickness of 1.76 mm, and has a plain edge. The obverse bears the Portuguese colonial arms encircled by the inscription “GUINÉ • CENTENARIO DA DESCOBERTA” (“Guinea, Centenary of the Discovery”), topped by the traditional five-towered crown representing Portuguese dominion. The reverse features the denomination “1 ESCUDO” within a dotted border, framed by the national legend “REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA” and the dual dates “1446–1946.” Composed of 90–70% copper alloyed with tin, this coin was minted in a quantity of 2,000,000 pieces and circulated as a standard commemorative currency in Portuguese Guinea. Beyond its monetary role, the coin symbolizes the persistence of Portugal’s imperial presence in Africa and its emphasis on maritime exploration as a cornerstone of national identity. Catalogued as Colnect PT-GN-000008 and KM# 7, it remains a notable piece for collectors of Portuguese colonial coinage, exploration anniversaries, and 20th-century commemoratives. Estimate "$25 – 50".
