Description
Issued in 1962 under Portuguese colonial administration, this bronze 1 Escudo coin represents the monetary system of Mozambique prior to independence in 1975. Struck at the Casa da Moeda de Lisboa, the coin weighs 8 grams, measures 26 mm in diameter, 2 mm in thickness, and features a plain edge with coin alignment. The obverse shows the Portuguese colonial shield beneath the five-towered mural crown, surrounded by the legend “MOCAMBIQUE” with the date “1962” below, reflecting both the integration of the colony into Portugal’s Estado Novo and the heraldic traditions of Portuguese territories. The reverse bears the denomination “1 ESCUDO” within a circular border, accompanied by the inscription “REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA.” Catalogued as KM# 82 (Colnect MZ-000022), this coin was struck in a composition of 95% copper, 3% zinc, and 2% tin, with a total mintage of 600,000. Standard currency during a period of rising anti-colonial sentiment and political unrest, it carries historical weight as part of the final decades of Portuguese presence in Africa. Estimate "$20 – 40".
Condition
Circulated with natural patina and light wear, devices and inscriptions remain well defined, overall in collectible grade.
