Japanese Woodblock Print, 1990s, with Yuzaburo Kawanishi seal
SIZE IN INCHES: 5 x 7 inches
YUZABURO KAWANISHI (1923-2014) was a Japanese printmaker active in the postwar era. Following the sosaku hanga tradition, he personally handled every stage of the printmaking process, including design, carving, and printing. His prints are known for simplified forms, vibrant colors, and the absence of traditional key lines. Kawanishi often captured scenes from his hometown of Kobe, highlighting urban landscapes, the port, and surrounding nature. His work blends the artistic influence of his father with his own modern perspective. He exhibited widely in major Japanese national exhibitions and gained international recognition through print biennales in Europe and North America. In addition to his artistic work, Kawanishi contributed to regional cultural initiatives and helped preserve the legacy of modern Japanese printmaking. He passed away in 2014.
