This copy of The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrim's Progress bears a handwritten signature attributed to Mark Twain on the title page beneath the printed author credit. The autograph corresponds stylistically with known examples of Twain's signature and appears prominently placed on the title page. The edition was issued in Boston by the Joseph Knight Company in association with the American Publishing Company of Hartford, publishers closely connected with Twain's works during the late nineteenth century.

The volume is bound in its original green decorative cloth boards featuring ornate black and cream stamped borders surrounding a central panel bearing the title Innocents Abroad and the author's name. The title page displays the full printed title The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrim's Progress above the author credit "By Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens)." Beneath the author credit appears a clear handwritten signature reading "Mark Twain." The book was issued in two volumes, and this example is labeled "Vol. I." The binding shows moderate wear including rubbing to the edges and corners, while the interior pages display light age toning consistent with late nineteenth-century paper but remain generally well preserved.Historical significance:
