Description
I bought this at auction in late 2025 and was truly excited to find it. I have never seen another. This is an early 1860s bitters bottle with the original dealer's paper label on the side. And what makes it extra special is the wording on the label The Cure of cramps and colds chills and fevers and the Diseases of Camp Life. Every Soldier should be supplied with these bitters as they will be found both safe and indispensable. The seller Jordan and Company at 220 Pear Street in Philadelphia is listed in the 1860 city directory as being run by Peter J Jordan. Although these alcoholic beverages were sold as medicinal bitters they were fundamentally whiskey. Comically the directions on the bottle instruct the soldier that a wine glass full taken three times a day morning noon and night will be found a sure remedy for the ague. The presence of the soldier marketing on the label is critical here dating this bottle to the Civil War. Also included with this lot is another bottle that came with it when I found them. It is a post Civil War bitters bottle with a civil war connection. Paines Celery Compound succeeded Jordan' Bitters in the 1870s. The inventor and the seller of these improved bitters were both Civil War heroes Dr. Edward Phelps developed the elixer and he had served in the Union Army. Seller Milton Paine had been a druggist and also a militia officer.
