Description
One of the most appealing Confederate flags I have owned. Outstanding condition wool bunting measuring a wonderful 5 x 7 feet in size. This was most likely a headquarters flag. The presence of 12 stars is truly significant. Very few specimens survive. The star count on the Confederate First National flag was not static; it evolved rapidly between March 1861 and the end of the year to reflect the additional states who seceded and joined the Confederacy. Because the "Stars and Bars" was designed to mirror the aesthetic of the U.S. flag, the addition of a star specifically represented the admission of a new state into the Confederate Pick. March 4th 1861 Seven stars (SC, MS, FL, AL, GA, LA, TX). May 1861 Nine stars (Virginia and Arkansas) July 1861 Eleven stars (North Carolina and Tennessee). Late November 1861 Twelve Stars (Missouri), Early December 1861 Thirteen stars (Kentucky). The 12-star Confederate First National flag is an extremely rare and historically significant variation that existed for only a very brief two week window. Very few 12-star First National flags survive today. Those that do are highly prized. And many were altered to 13 stars. This flag begs to tell its’ story. The middle of the center stripe has the remnants of a cloth historical tag that was intentionally removed leaving only the edge border. Whatever was written on the now missing cloth is lost to the ages. It may have been the HQ Designation, or possibly Yankee capture history. There are remnants of an ink marking along the intact border, and one letter appears to be a Q.
The flag exhibits both machine and hand stitching. The horizontal stitching along the stripes is mostly machine sewn, with some hand stitched repairs. The stars (double sided) are hand sewn onto the canton. The illustration with the musket for size comparison gives you a good idea of how impressive this will look on the collection room wall. Truly IMPRESSIVE!
