19th c. Antique Anna Pottery Pig Flask

Description

Anna Pottery, Union County, Illinois. Antique American folk art pottery "pig" flask in the form of a recumbent swine, 19th century. Stoneware with brown "Albany slip" glaze. With incised inscription along the torso of the pig reading "Good Old Schnaps in a Hog's..."; the text terminating at the posterior of the animal. Incised along the underside "Anna Union Co., Ills."

Anna Pottery was founded in Union County, Illinois during the mid-19th century by brothers Cornwall Kirkpatrick (American, 1814-1890) and Wallace Kirkpatrick (American, 1828-1896). The were renowned for their array of sculptural stoneware alongside their utilitarian wares. In addition to their well-known pig flasks, the pottery is especially celebrated for dramatic snake jugs, vessels encircled with applied serpents, and applied expressive mask-like faces. These inventive forms reflect the Kirkpatricks' humor and technical skill, and today stand among the most distinctive achievements of 19th-century American stoneware.
Height: 3 1/2 in x width: 8 1/4 in x depth: 3 in.

Condition

There are losses to one of the ears, the squeal, and the male anatomical attribute along the underside. There are some additional small scuffs and scratches. Light wear to the feet. The flask is without a cork.
